Footprint
Problem Statement
Climate change is a growing global problem, but individuals don't always feel capable of affecting meaningful change on their own.
Background
IBM issued a 48-hour challenge to conceptualize and create an app prototype meant to guide and encourage everyday individuals in making an impact on the global climate crisis.
Concept
Scope
Footprint, is meant to educate users on how we as individuals can reduce our carbon foot print and take steps toward living a more sustainable lifestyle.
The platform would be in partnership with sustainable brands in the area and these brands would provide user rewards in the form of discounts, coupons, and merchandise.
The team chose to pursue a concept built around suggesting and rewarding environmentally conscious behavior by offering tips and motivation, as well as opportunities for achieving conservation goals with their community.
A social platform within the app would keep users accountable, making them share their accomplishments with other Footprint members to motivate and inspire each other.
Categories
Every conservationist goal presented by the app would fall into 1 of 4 categories--Home, Transportation, Shopping, and Food--each contained and displayed in its own section within the app.
Within these sections, goals will be further differentiated by difficulty level. As one goal is completed, an incrementally higher level goal will be offered.

Wireframes
The team initially planned to include both vertical and horizontal scrolling capabilities within the app, but eventually decided that eliminating horizontal scrolling would create a more cohesive, intuitive user experience.

Final screens
In the second day of the competition, the team converted Day 1's low fidelity design concepts into high fidelity interface designs.
In order to sign up to use our app, a user would first need to complete a quiz reflecting on their environmental practices.
From there, a profile would be created and a list of goals catered to their results would be offered. The user could then mark off accomplishments and earn points as they complete each one. These goals are recorded and the points earned can be traded in for rewards on the rewards page.
Sustainability is a journey. Footprint’s mission is to show just how easy it can be to take steps toward the preservation of our planet.
